Atari's Line of Personal Computers

Atari PC1

Released in January 1987 and discontinued in 1990, the Atari PC series marked Atari’s entry into the IBM PC-compatible market. The first model, later renamed the Atari PC1, was followed by the PC2, which featured a larger case and five expansion slots. Atari ultimately released five desktop PC models: the PC1, PC2, PC3, PC4, and PC5.

Atari PC4The Atari PC1 was built using the compact chassis of the Atari Megafile 44 and lacked ISA expansion slots. Key features included:

  • EGA graphics (onboard NSI Logic EVC315-S), compatible with CGA and Hercules

Atari ABC 386Atari ABC 386

The final Atari IBM-compatible model, the ABC 386 ("Atari Basic Computer"), came in both desktop and laptop versions:

  • CPU: 386SX at 20 MHz or 386DX at 40 MHz
  • 1 or 2 MB RAM
  • Super-VGA graphics
  • 40 MB or 80 MB hard drive
  • 1.44 MB floppy drive
  • Came with MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.0
  • Also available as the ABC N386SX laptop version

 


Operating System

The Atari PC line shipped with a combination of MS-DOS and Atari’s mouse-driven GEM desktop environment:

  • Microsoft MS-DOS 3.21
  • GW-BASIC 3.2
  • GEM Desktop EGA v2.1
  • GEM Write v1.0 and GEM Paint v2.0

EGA (PC1, PC2, PC3)

  • NSI Logic EVC315-S onboard
  • Supports 16 colors from a 64-color palette
  • Resolutions:
    • EGA: 640×350 (16 colors)
    • CGA: 640×200 (4 colors)
    • Hercules: 720×348 (monochrome)

VGA (PC4, PC5)

  • PC4: Onboard Paradise PVGA1A-JK
  • PC5: WD VGA Plus 16 card (256 KB)

 

Audio Capabilities

The Atari PCs featured only the standard PC speaker—no dedicated sound hardware.

Monitors
