LukasArts/Lucasfilm Video Games

The Short History of LucasArts/Lucasfilm

Founded in 1971 by George Lucas, Lucasfilm Ltd. was originally a film and television production company. In May 1982, the company expanded into gaming with the creation of Lucasfilm Games, which later gained worldwide acclaim for its innovative point-and-click adventure titles.

  • In 1985, game designer Ron Gilbert joined Lucasfilm and developed the SCUMM engine—short for Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion. This revolutionary tool allowed players to interact with games using graphical commands rather than text input, changing the landscape of adventure gaming
  • From 1990 to 2013, the company operated under the name LucasArts, under which it released many iconic titles
  • In 2012, The Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm, bringing its game division under the Disney umbrella. Over the decades, Lucasfilm and LucasArts also developed a wide array of successful Star Wars video games
